EMDR- (DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING WITH EYE MOVEMENTS)

The technique of Desensitization and Reprocessing with Eye Movements is a psychotherapy approach known as EMDR for short. It is a technique that originated when Dr. Francine Shapiro discovered that eye movements reduce the severity of disturbing emotions and thoughts.

Many scientific studies have been published showing that EMDR technique provides success in the treatment of many areas such as phobia, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, childhood traumas, chronic pain, especially disturbing life experiences such as war, natural disasters, harassment.

So how does EMDR work?

Our brain has two parts: the right brain and the left brain. The right brain keeps emotional records of the event I experienced. The left brain keeps its logical records, that is, it gives meaning to the event we experience, makes inferences, looks realistically.  In any experience, there is a constant flow of information between these two brains.Dec. The brain analyzes the emotional and realistic sides of the event, filters harmful information and makes functional inferences. However, when the intensity of emotion is too high in traumatic life events, the flow of information between these two regions is blocked, and the meaning loaded into the event remains recorded in a Decontaminated form. Emdr therapy allows us to establish contact between these two brains and helps the left brain process the emotions of the painful event experienced. Dec.  At the end of the process, the experienced event is not erased from the brain, but the effect of the bad feelings caused by the event disappears, and the brain begins to see the event as healthy and make realistic inferences. In emdr therapy, it is essential to stimulate both parts of the brain at the same time with bilateral eye movements, sound or tapping (tapping). One or all of these forms of stimulation can be applied at the same time. The more stimulation, the faster the deepening and processing of information. I usually prefer to use them all. I conduct my sessions in a holistic framework in which I combine other therapy methods and approaches I have received with EMDR.
